Discussion about “I Just Simply Can’t Pass It! Video”

"Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning."

Lets watch the video!

From the case brought by the video, it stated that a girl named Lily Evans do not believe on her selves in case of doing final examination in Junior High School. This kind of believe made her so frustrated and continually demotivated to learn the subject for final examination especially math which is the most difficult subjects in her opinion. She often yelling out her anger because of Math like shouting “Gosh, why on earth Math is exist? It’s too frustrating to me! I just simply can’t pass it!”, or “I may just simply fail, just fail, I will never graduate with this stupid subject around!”.  She likes History very much since she really likes learning about past events and the more she get angry with Math, the more she will try to find a way out. Then, you must know what happened to this history-worm lady. Well, ofcourse she will grab a  history book out and drowned in reading rather than doing some algebra and stuffs. By this attitude, her parents feel concerned and try to find solution for her girl.
In my opinion, as the collaboration between parents and teachers is highly reinforced nowdays. The parent who know more about their children’s behaviour and not really sure on what action that should be taken should just try to come to school and consult with the teacher. It can be homeroom teacher or certain subject teacher whom the parents are comfortable to communicate with. As the teacher has known the problem, since the problem is on the motivation of the students to learn, there must be something to do about it.
The teacher analyze that the problem that the student is lack of self-efficacy since she does not confidence in accomplishing a task in Math for the examination. Do you know what self-efficacy is guys? Well it is the state when someone beliefs that she/he is able to accomplish a task. Meanwhile, Lily is not, right?.
Lily always avoid challenging task which provided by the teacher since she keeps reading other book, keep having a low effort to fix her problem with Math, and even have beliefs that she may as well to just simply fail in the exam.
As a teacher, can you let your students live with a thought like that? Let discuss about it!
Well, as for me, I really don’t want my students to think the way Lily did. It’s natural indeed to be frustrated about something that you just simply can’t do but as a teacher, it is a must to give them explanation that even it is something very hard to achieve, if someone believe, then somehow they will achieve it.
As the quote written in the very beginning of this post, you just have to put some faith on yourselves because if you even don’t believe on yourselves start from your thought, then it may resulted that you will fail because you just think you may fail. It’s kind of like magic how the power of thought and beliefs can drives your body in doing something. Thus, let your students have some faith on themselves so that they will have the courage to achieve it.
There are several things that you can do in increasing the students beliefs in learning.
In this case, as the case of Lily can be categorized as low Self-Efficay student. Then, following the steps in increasing Self-Efficacy is applicaple. The steps are:
1. Teach specific strategies – try to guide the students more specifically concerning on what they are lacking and give them specific strategies in order to overcome their fear.
2. Don’t let your students to be overly anxious – don’t make your students stressed with the upcoming task that they need to defeat. Let them be serious, but don’t scare them and make them to be too worried like what happened to Lily,
3. Help students to develop short-term and long-term goal – this is important because if your students is in the state of very anxious and inconfident in something. They might messed up with their initial goals. Thus, keep them stick on the goal, and even help them to develop their goal more is very essential to keep them aware that there are something that they should achieve.
4. Provide students with positive support from adults and peers – teacher may not be the only one who is working to put beliefs on student’ mind. Support and encouragement indeed should be given by all people close to the students to maximize the result.
Now, go tell Lily that she shouldn’t be so desperate about her state of condition. She just have to put some faith and stay positive in learning. Then, soon she will be able to seize Math with her hands! Don’t you think so teachers? Please share your thoughts to helo Lily since a student like Lily might be everywhere and they need your help just to show them the way J
